Zinnia Benary's Giant Lime – Organic (Zinnia elegans)
Nuovi Semi
Zinnia Benary's Giant Lime (Zinnia elegans): developed by the renowned German seed company Benary, this is one of the most highly regarded cut-flower cultivars in the world, appreciated by florists and growers for its exceptional ornamental qualities. This selection stands out for its magnificent, extravagant double flowers, which can reach 10–12 cm in diameter and display a refined, bright lime-green colour. The plant produces long, straight and very sturdy stems, reaching 80–100 cm in height, specifically developed to support the weight of the large flower heads and to provide exceptional performance both in the garden and in bouquets of cut flowers.
Botanically, it belongs to the Asteraceae family and is a fast-growing annual species, characterized by opposite, lance-shaped leaves and continuous flowering from early summer until the first autumn frosts. In addition to its undeniable aesthetic value in landscape design and floral art — where its lime-green colour provides a sophisticated contrast when combined with pastel shades or saturated colours — Benary's Giant Zinnia also has considerable ecological value. Its flower heads, rich in nectar and pollen, act as a true magnet for butterflies, bees, bumblebees and other pollinating insects, making it an excellent plant for increasing biodiversity and supporting natural pest control in the garden.
In cultivation, it proves to be an extremely hardy, productive and easy-to-grow variety, specifically selected to offer greater resistance to powdery mildew than traditional zinnias. It prefers full sun and fertile, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. Seeds can be sown under cover in a seedbed at the end of winter, or directly outdoors in spring, once all risk of frost has passed and soil temperatures have reached at least 18–20°C. To encourage denser branching and abundant production of cutting stems, it is advisable to pinch out the main growing tip when the plant reaches 20–30 cm in height. Water regularly but direct irrigation to the base of the plant, avoiding wetting the foliage. Regular removal of spent flowers will prolong flowering until the end of the season.
