Buena Mulata Chili Pepper BIO (Capsicum annuum)
Nuovi Semi
Buena Mulata Chili Pepper (Capsicum annuum) is a rare heirloom variety with a fascinating history, having become a symbol for seed guardians and those dedicated to preserving agricultural biodiversity. The original seeds were gifted in 1944 by African American artist Horace Pippin to beekeeper Horace Weaver. Decades later, Weaver’s grandson rediscovered them in the family freezer and helped bring the variety back into circulation through heirloom seed exchange networks. One of the most spectacular features of this variety is the remarkable colour transformation of its fruits: the peppers emerge in a deep, dark purple, gradually fade to peachy pink, shift to mustard orange and eventually turn a brilliant red when fully ripe. The heat level is medium to high, comparable to that of a Cayenne pepper, ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU).
Its aromatic profile evolves alongside its colour. In the purple stage, the fruits have a sharp, herbaceous and slightly earthy flavour, while at the red stage they develop a pronounced fruity sweetness.
In the kitchen, Buena Mulata is an exceptionally versatile cultivar, ideal for drying, making hot sauces or preparing unusual sweet-and-sour preserves. Thanks to its unique appearance and vivid colours, the purple fruits are also perfectly suited to botanical mixology and cocktail creation, where they can be infused into spirits to extract both a lingering heat and unusual colour nuances. They are equally excellent for preparing visually striking flavoured vinegars.
In the garden, the plant is remarkably hardy and highly productive. The bush reaches approximately 60–80 centimetres in height and has considerable ornamental value, with dark veining along its stems and flowers featuring purple-edged petals. The slender fruits, measuring around 8–10 centimetres in length, mature approximately 75–85 days after transplanting. Thanks to its resilience and striking ornamental appeal, Buena Mulata is particularly well suited to container growing, requiring only a good amount of sunlight and well-drained soil to prevent waterlogging.
As a distinctive heirloom variety, Buena Mulata is a rewarding choice for gardeners and seed savers alike, combining an extraordinary visual display with culinary versatility and a remarkable story of preservation for future generations.
